Hi there, {{first_name | friend}},
I'm gearing up for a cultural celebration at my girls' school where families bring a potluck dish and make a poster to share their culture. And it got me thinking about my own family's culture.
Mine blends Appalachian, SoCal, and Texan traditions, plus a few we've picked up in New Orleans and Ireland along the way. We do celebrations big (I have over 30 first cousins), and we cook everything from scratch when we’re together.
What about your family culture, {{first_name | friend}}? Have you ever thought about how you can preserve it (beyond school projects)?
The reason I ask is because AI can make it easier to capture your culture, explore it as a family, and introduce you to other traditions.
Here are 3 prompts I’ve used lately to document my family’s own special culture (and to explore other cultures in my area):
Prompts to Capture and Celebrate Family Culture

Handwritten recipes from friends Mari, Melissa, my Grandmom, and my Mom
that AI typed up and saved for me
Prompt 1: Create a Family Culture Archive
Act as my family archivist. Interview me about what life is like in my family right now. Ask me questions one at a time, taking note of my answers as we go. Topics should include daily rhythms, traditions, inside jokes, favorite meals, values, celebrations, and the little things that make us who we are. After the interview, draft a document I can save that captures what life is like in our family at this moment in time.
Mom tip: Try this in voice mode, maybe on a walk. It feels more natural than typing, and you'll be surprised what memories surface when you're moving and talking.
Prompt 2: Type Up Handwritten Recipes
Act as my recipe transcriber. Use the attached photos of handwritten recipes. Type them up in a clear, usable format with ingredients listed first, then step-by-step instructions. Include any notes about timing, temperature, or special techniques. Make it easy to follow and easy to share, and if there is anything you can’t read, ask for more details (don’t generate anything).
Mom tip: Save these to a Meal Planning project in your favorite AI tool so they stay in your meal planning rotation. That way Grandpappy’s Spicy Creole Shrimp or Aunt Mary’s Cheese Squares can show up when you're asking AI for ideas.
Prompt 3: Explore Other Cultures Near You
Act as my cultural exploration guide. Search for festivals, celebrations, museums, cultural sites, and authentic restaurants within 30 miles of [insert your zip code]. I want to expose my family to traditions and cultures beyond our own. Provide a list with dates, locations, descriptions, and why each experience could be meaningful for my family.
Mom tip: Use this prompt for upcoming trips too. Exploring local culture is one of the best ways to make travel more meaningful for kids.

Reddhi Patel, founder of Aligna and Lumnari Interiors, calls herself a cultural architect. "I love that term because it captures both the beauty and the burden of it," she shared in my most recent podcast episode. She's the bridge between two cultures in her home, translating festivals and language for both sides of her family.
If you've ever felt the weight of being the cultural bridge in your family, this conversation might help.
